Pop-ups are advertisements on the web to attract to attract web traffic. It is usually a small window that appears on your web interface. It appears as another window and contains advertisements. Java script is used to create these pop ups ads.


Pop-ups and Pop-downs

There is another type of ads called pop-under ads. These are underlying ads on a window and don’t appear unless you close the window. People tend to response more towards pop down ads than pop-ups. It is because whenever you are on web and pop up ads appears you get frustrated and immediately close them without even noticing them. But on the other hand when an ad appears after you finish your browsing and close the window you are probably more interested in them.

Block Pop-ups in Chrome

To block the pop-up ads on Google Chrome you have to,

  • Open the browser and click chrome menu on top of browser tool bar.
  • Choose Settings from there.
  • Go to the end of window and choose Show Advanced Settings.

  • In the Privacy section, click on Content settings button.
  • Under Pop-up you can see two radio buttons. To block pop-ups you have to choose the option ‘Do not allow any sites to show pop-ups’.

It will not allow any website to display the pop-ups.

Approved list of sites

It shows if there is any list of sites from which you have approved to show pop-ups. To remove them from the list,

  • Open the browser and click chrome menu on top of browser tool bar.
  • Choose Settings from there.
  • Go to the end of window and choose Show Advanced Settings.
  • In the Privacy section, click on Content settings button.
  • The pop-up section in Content settings has a button name Manage exceptions…Click on this.

  • It displays a list of pop-up exceptions with host name. Take the cursor over it and it will show ‘x’ at the right end. Click the ‘x’ to remove the host from the exception list.
  • Click Done.

Block Pop-ups on Safari

To block the pop-up ads on Safari you have to go to,

  • Click on Safari on your browser menu.
  • Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  • Now click on Security tab.
  • In the Web Content Section you will see an option Block pop-up windows with a checkbox. To turn it off click to check this option. It will block the pop-up ads on your safari browser.
