When you are using your Mac for long time then there are chances that you are cluttering unnecessary files and folders. You need to delete the unused files and apps to make it run faster and create space in your Mac. Learn how to clean up Mac by performing the following tasks.
Remove Unnecessary Apps
When you have installed applications and you are not using them then it is time to delete those applications. They take space and need to be removed from your Mac. To delete an application just drag the application to the trash. When you empty the trash then the application will be permanently deleted from the system.
To find the application and their storage space, go to the Finder Window and select Applications. Click on ‘Show item in list bar’, you can see the applications and the space they have occupied.
Delete Files and installers
Mac Sierra OS provides you an option to clean up your Mac. You can choose the options to set according to your need. You have to go to Apple menu> About this Mac> Storage> Manage> Recommendations.
It has few options Store in iCloud which gives you space in iCloud to store an images and photos etc. avoid this option.
- Next is Optimize Storage which can delete your already watched content.
- Empty Trash Automatically, it permanently deletes the files or folders from the trash once they are more than 30 days in trash. You can turn it on to delete the files permanently without your intervention.
- Reduce Clutter option has Review Files button. When you click it you will see a file browser with displays all the relevant files from the folders. There is one tab for Large Files you can delete the large files to create more space. Another tab is Downloads which contains the files like installers and temporary items. You can empty the folder to delete the files.
If you are using same Mac for a longer time it is possible that the Mac contains some duplicate data. To delete the duplicates Apple’s some application allows you to remove duplication. For example you can go to Apple’s Address Book and select card> Look for Duplicates. It automatically creates a sheet with duplicates entries. Click on Merge and the duplicates will be merged into single card.
Clean up your Desktop
Too much files on the desktop slows the finder. The finder considers the each file and folder as a window. So it slows your search so if you see that the finder is slow then its time you remove unnecessary files from the desktop.
Clean up Internet Browser
The browser of your Mac i.e. the Safari needs to be cleaned. Open Safari and hit Command-Option-E to clear the cache. Go to History tab in Safari menu and Select ‘Delete History and Website Data’ and choose the time to delete the history from. Click on Clear History and your browsing history will be deleted.
You can run disk utility tool in your Mac to check for the corrupt files or if your app close unexpectedly. You have to go to Applications >Utilities >Disk Utility. Now run First Aid to repair certain disk problems. Follow the prompts to run the disk utility to check for the problems and then repair any of the found issues.
