Many users come across the problem of external hard drive not showing up on Mac. Most people have their data on external hard drive and it is really bothersome when you need the data and it is not accessible any more. There are some fixes you should try when your external hard drive is not showing up on Mac.
Show these items on Desktop
Go to the Settings and Finder Preferences. In General tab make sure External hard drive is checked under ‘Show these items on desktop‘.
Check Power Source
While connecting the external hard drive to the Mac, make sure the drive is properly plugged in. Also make sure that the drive is getting enough power and the external drive is not connected to any external power supply.
Check the USB cable and Port
Make sure the cable connecting the external hard drive and Mac is working and the drive is mounted to the port properly. If still the Mac is not showing up the drive, try to change the USB port and connect the external hard drive to some other port in your Mac. Try plugging your external hard drive to some other PC to find out if it is working properly.
Restart Your Mac
When you are trying to find out the external hard drive, try this method. Open Disk utility and find out if the external hard drive is greyed. If yes try to connect some other hard drive to the Mac and find out if it is shown on your Mac. Still you didn’t see any drive then close the Disk Utility and restart your Mac. After the restart is completed try to connect the external hard drive to the Mac. Open Finder and check your external hard drive.
Type External Drive Path
If you cannot access the hard drive, you can try to find it by Finder Menu and clicking on Go to Finder. You have to type the external hard drive name and path as E: /Volumes/Myharddisk. It may help to open your hard disk which you cannot access directly.
Mount the Hard drive
Sometimes it happens that the external hard drive is not mounted to your Mac. When a disk is not mounted you cannot access or change the data in it. You can check that either the disk is mounted or not by going to Utilities and then Disk Utility and find out if the disk appears on the list on the left window as external disk. Check for the volume if it is greyed out that means the volume is present but not mounted. You should high light the volume and select mount. Now you can go to the Finder window and check the drive under Devices to see it is mounted.
IF the above method doesn’t work then you should try to run Verify disk utility. First Aid helps to find errors in the disk and performs some repairing to the disk when there are some issues. Go to the Disk Utility from Utilities. You should highlight the greyed volume and choose First Aid tab and then select Run. If it finds any errors those could be fixed by selecting the Repair Disk. If the First Aid finds some error it fixes them and the disk should appear to be mounted on your Mac.
