Mac has a built-in tool called Time Machine. Once you set the Time Machine for backup it automatically copies your files to your external hard drive and creates a copy of it and saves it. In case your external hard disk is full it deletes the old files and creates the space for newer version of those files.
External hard drive
First you need to connect the hard drive to the MAC. Try to use the external hard drive of size about two to four times larger than the hard disk of your MAC. The Time Machine uses all the spaces in your hard drive to save and store data or files. If you would like to use some of the space of external storage for your own use then make a partition in your external hard drive.
When you connect your hard drive you will be asked that if you want to use it as a backup disk. Select ‘Use as Backup Disk’ option to use the external backup disk. If you don’t receive this message to choose your external disk as a backup disk, you have to
- Go to System Preferences> Time Machine.
- From Time machine preferences click on Select Backup Disk and choose your external drive as a backup disk.
Restore from Backup Files
Mac automatically creates a backup on your external hard drive when we select the external drive for backup. Mac will keep on creating backup on the external hard drive without prompting. To restore any file to your hard drive you just need to click on Time Machine icon from the menu bar and click on Enter Time Machine. You can check in the backup files for your lost file and restore it to your hard disk.
